Our Story Starts from 2010

Ashana Trust was established in 2010 as a registered rights-based organization to provide administrative support to the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA), a nationwide movement advocating for Muslim women's rights.​

Background

Over recent decades, women have increasingly claimed their rights, yet factors like religion, caste, class, and ethnicity continue to determine women's status. A large section of women, especially from minority communities, still struggle to live with dignity.​

Vision

Ashana Trust envisions a society where all women, irrespective of their situation, are free from fear and want. The organization specifically focuses on creating an enabling environment for Muslim women to exercise their constitutional rights and strive for equal rights and justice within their community.​

Mission

The mission is to enable the social, economic, educational, legal, and political empowerment of Muslim women. Ashana Trust advocates for policy changes on issues concerning Muslim women, specifically related to Muslim family law, entitlements, and state initiatives. The strategy includes training, capacity building, leadership development, campaigning, and advocacy initiatives.​

Activities

  • Providing Legal Aid to all Women along with information about their Legal Rights
  • Enabling Women Leaders to Access Government Schemes & Programmes
  • Monitoring State Apparatus Like Ration Shops, Health Clinics, Schools & Other Civic Amenities
  • Creating an Empowered Based of Muslim Women Which Fights Patriarchy Wherever It Exists
  • Vocational Coaching Centers to Help Women Become Financially Independent
  • Conducting Awareness Programmes on Mental Health with Women, Youth & Children

Impact So Far

Ashana Trust has been administratively supporting the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan [BMMA] and the achievement of BMMA are as follows

  • Successfully got the triple divorce law passed through a 12 year campaign
  • Got Supreme Court judgment for entry of women in Haji Ali dargah
  • Trained 20 women to become qazis
  • Trained thousands of Muslim on their legal rights
  • Trained Muslim women to lead from the front on all socio-economic-legal issues
  • Created Sehr, Udaan Groups to enable Muslim youth to be self confident

Future Thrust

  • Continue to advocate for policy changes in the legal rights of Muslim women
  • Reach out to the vast population of Muslim youth for enabling their leadership
  • Continue rights awareness programmes with Muslim women, enabling their leadership
